Consumer Reports : Using researchIT CT for Results!

A Short Story
The East Hampton Public Library is a former subscriber to Consumer Reports. The library dropped its subscription when the Connecticut State Library added it to its list of statewide researchIT CT services (formerly iCONN); i.e., no sense incurring a duplicate expense.

Moving Forward
Though accessing Consumer Reports data takes a few more steps than it used to, there is still a wealth of essential and free consumer-friendly information at the ready and at your finger tips. Here's a how-to if you are using a PC:

Step 1 : Login to EBSCOHost
Click and you will be asked to enter your library barcode number. Your card number is 14 digits long and should be entered without spaces between the digits. After entering your card number, click the login button.

Once you are logged in, you'll see a list of databases from which you may choose.

Step 2 : Choose MasterFILE Premiere
Scroll down through the list of available databases and check the box for MasterFILE Premiere. Press the enter key and you're ready to search and find information from Consumer Reports.

Step 3 : Use the Drop-down Menu to Limit Your Search
Use the 'Journal name' selection in the drop-down menu and enter (not case sensitive) consumer reports in the uppermost search box.

In the second-level box, after the AND, enter the general product you are shopping for and for which you are seeking product reviews.

Give us a call at 860-267-6621 if you need help with a PC query. Tablet and phone advice coming soon...

National Car Care Month

Squeaky Wheels?
Your car has a way of telling you when there might be a problem. We're certainly not mechanics but some preliminary car care questions may be answered with help from your local library, using your trusty East Hampton Public Library card.

Use your library card to find out about a car care problem you may have or if you are automobile-handy, to determine whether you can fix it yourself or need to visit your car care center.

CHILTONLIBRARY
Your local library card has access to the same information used by professional shops -- including labor times -- all a few online clicks away when you connect to ChiltonLibrary. Enter your library card barcode number to get started.

  1. Enter the year, make and model of your vehicle.
  2. Navigate to the labor estimating tool.
  3. Click select, then use "Search Operations" to enter a query or use "Standard Operations" to access pull-down menus by topic.
The "Standard Operations" click will look like this:

So maybe you can do it yourself; or maybe this is job is best left to the pros. Either way, ChiltonLibrary is good tool to help you understand a problem, confirm estimates, and make informed car care decisions. The better informed we are as consumers, the better service we can expect.

Happy Car Care Month and hope your vehicle is working well and taking you where you want to be, East Hampton Public Library included...

eAudios and eBooks from OneClickdigital

News from the Front Desk...
Our OneClickdigital eAudio service receives a hefty workout each month. Seems as though you do like listening to high quality unabridged titles. New titles are added monthly.

If you are a regular service user, you may have noticed the addition of eBook content and the mixing in of the book symbol (e-read) with the headphone symbol (e-listen). Our start-up collection of OneClickdigital eBooks included classic reads and many ever-present summer reading list titles.

We have since moved to incrementally add popular titles, series books, gentle reads, contemporary romances, books for kids, best-sellers that seem likely to stand the test of time, and great reads you may have missed along the way. New titles are added monthly, including titles from major publishing houses.

Our overall e-read and e-listen collections include titles added by iCONN.org, our statewide information resource provider.

How to Use OneClickdigital
Step 1: Go to OneClickdigital and please do check out the user tutorial to get started.
Step 2: Login (if you have an existing account) or use your East Hampton Public Library card to Create a OneClickdigital Account

East Hampton (Connecticut) News: Digital Version

Say Hello to the East Hampton News Online
The East Hampton News was once a mighty print newspaper serving East Hampton, Connecticut. The paper was what we would today describe as a hyperlocal news outlet. The library and the Chatham Historical Society hold collections of the original newspapers and as you might expect, the paper copies have deteriorated and require careful handling.

An Essential Thank You to the Connecticut State Library
The library and the Connecticut State Library's (CSL) Preservation Office opened discussions about the potential to digitize the East Hampton News in summer 2013. The CSL held duplicate negatives of the East Hampton News on film: issues in 1887-1888 and issues from July 1, 1932 through Dec. 31, 1952.

With best preservation practice, technical, and logistical advice from Preservation Librarian Jane Cullinane and Gail Hurley from the iCONN office, the CSL allowed the library to borrow the duplicate negatives. Our digitization vendor, Advantage Preservation, has since then digitized the film and created a searchable database.

Using Our Database
Click here for free online access. Take advantage of the Help Button for best advice on how to craft a useful search that yields best results. If you need help, email the library or give us a call.

Special thanks to the Chatham Historical Society for supporting the project.

Preparing for the Big Tests

Familiarity and Success: Over the Summer and in to the Fall
If you're a high school student interested in maximizing your performance on a standardized test -- especially given so many for-fee or free options available -- consider adding ePrep to your overall test preparation toolkit.

What's ePrep?
ePrep is test-prep service offered by the library, free to library card holders. The service offers training programs for the SAT, ACT, PSAT, PLAN, and middle and upper level SSAT exams.

How Does ePrep Work?
Try interactive lessons accompanied by videos in which experts explain the best secrets and approach to choosing the right answer to common test questions. ePrep doesn’t tell you which bubble to fill in with your trusty number 2; it explains why a certain answer is correct and helps you learn from your mistakes. You’ll also use practice tests and quizzes under timed conditions to make sure you’re on the right track.

We'll here add a video explanation of how ePrep works.

How Do I Sign Up to Use ePrep?
First up, you'll need an East Hampton Public Library card. Stop by the library to obtain a new card or renew your oldie. With card in hand, you may use the ePrep service 24-7, on your time, and at your own pace. Click here to sign up for the service and explore the bubbles over the summer and in to the fall...

Testing... Testing... Freading!

A New Look at eBooks
The East Hampton Public Library is now testing Freading -- an eBook service brought to the EHPL via Library Ideas, LLC.  The good news is unlike other available library eBook services, this one allows simultaneous users to use/read the same title, which means no waiting in line.

What You'll Need to Use the Service
To use our eBook service, you will first need a valid local library card : current (not expired) and with no fines over 10 bucks. Second, and in most cases, you will need an Adobe Digital Editions Account, easy and free to acquire.  Third, Freading is compatible with any of the following devices:
Starting to Read with Freading
Click here to start; click login and enter your EHPL library barcode and pin.

Every Monday morning, you'll be given 5 download tokens. Each e-book download uses between 1 and 4 tokens, depending on demand for the book. Unused tokens rollover to the next week but your total token count resets to 5 every four weeks.

Freading e-books check out for 2 weeks, at which point they can be renewed for another two weeks. Renewal of a popular title uses 1 download token; older titles renew without a token.

Archaeology Matters

The Terra Cotta Army
Terra-cotta army. Photograph. Encyclopedia Britannica Online Library Edition.
Our community includes many local residents who travel widely for different reasons.  Late last year, one such resident traveled to China and visited the Qin Tomb, an ancient archaeological site well more than 2000 years old. The site contains an army of over 8,000 life-size terra-cotta soldiers; digging and restoration of the site continues to this day.

Next time you visit the library, scan the display shelves behind our circulation desk and play I Spy.  Between the fun figures, children's book character favorites, and pop-culture icons, find a well-done replica of a terra-cotta general, a gift to library by our world-travelling patron. Thank you, Pam!
